Common Media File Formats Explained
If you work with audio, video or images, you'll bump into the same handful of file formats every day. Here's a plain-English guide to the most common ones, what they're for, and when you might want to convert between them with the EditCrafted Media Converter.
Video formats
MP4 (.mp4)
The most universal video container. Almost every device, browser and social platform plays MP4 out of the box. If you're not sure what format to use, MP4 is usually the right answer.
MOV (.mov)
Apple's QuickTime container. Very common when exporting from iPhone or Mac apps. Often holds the same kind of video data as MP4, but not every platform accepts MOV directly — converting to MP4 is a common fix.
AVI (.avi)
An older video container, common on Windows. Still in use, but modern platforms prefer MP4 for size and compatibility.
Audio formats
MP3 (.mp3)
The classic compressed audio format. Small, plays anywhere. Perfect for podcasts, music demos and voice notes.
WAV (.wav)
Uncompressed audio. Pristine quality, but files are large. Best for editing — convert to MP3 before sharing.
M4A (.m4a)
Apple-style compressed audio (often AAC inside an MP4 container). High quality, smaller than WAV, but less universally accepted than MP3.
Image formats
PNG (.png)
Lossless image format with transparency support. Best for screenshots, UI assets, logos and any image where exact pixels matter.
JPG / JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
Lossy compression — very small files at acceptable quality. The standard for photographs and most web images.
WEBP (.webp)
A modern format from Google that combines great compression with optional transparency. Excellent for web performance, but some upload forms and editors still reject it — converting to PNG or JPG is the usual workaround.
When should I convert?
- An app or platform rejects your file's format.
- Your file is too large to upload, email or share.
- You need transparency (PNG) or maximum compression (JPG / WEBP).
- You're moving a file from one editor or device into another.
